‘The Tinder Swindler’ Film Review: In documentaries made on True Crime, Netflix has captured almost all types of crimes. A few days ago a documentary named “The Puppet Master” was released in which a man claims to be a British undercover spy and traps girls, trains them to become spies, and then drives them away from home on the pretext of marriage. takes away. On the same lines, new types of crimes have also come in the new era, in which there is a form of digital crimes, creating fake profiles on dating websites to trap girls and then asking for their money on some pretext and then disappearing. A gruesome form of this crime is shown in Netflix’s new documentary “The Tinder Swindler”.
The beautiful manner in which director Felicity Morris has opened this crime layer by layer, it can create panic and also warns all those who are looking for love in the online age on dating web sites. Tinder is an app on which you can create a profile and search for a partner of your choice and temperament. Usually, after reading the profile, taking complete information, knowing the likes and dislikes of that person, the matter should be taken forward, but due to our decreasing attention span, we make the mistake of understanding a person only by looking at photographs. Simon Leviev took advantage of this. Simon used to describe himself as the heir to the Leviev Diamond Company.
Tinder had some photographs of her in beautiful places with expensive brand clothes, shoes and vehicles and her Tinder account was linked to Instagram, the world’s largest photo sharing app. In his Instagram account, he was always seen coming by private jet, eating food in expensive hotels, drinking alcohol and celebrating holidays, that is, if you don’t get life again, then live it today. Seeing his profile like this, girls would have liked him very much and to show it on Tinder, they would have to “right swipe” on the photo. As soon as she did this work, she would get a message that Simon also liked her and swiped right. From here starts such a vortex in which girls get trapped and ruin their lives.
First of all, Simon would take these girls to nice places, luxurious dinners, parties, private jet rides, that is, would take them to the world of luxury. He would have a bodyguard with him and sometimes his business partner too. His company also had a website so that no one was suspicious. Gradually, when the girl would fall in love with him, he would turn his first card. Simon used to say that since he is a diamond merchant, his life is in danger, many people want to kill him, he is working on some big deal which his competitors do not want to do. Seeing his high profile lifestyle, it was easy to believe. Then one day he tells the girl that his security has told her not to use her credit card, otherwise her enemies will find out where she is.
After this he used to ask the girl if she could give him some cash, just a few thousand dollars. Innocent girls used to give it too. Then Simon used to get a credit card made in the name of that girl, with the help of which he used to book plane tickets from that girl, pay hotel bills and do shopping. That girl would get comforted every time that he would return the money soon, in two or three weeks. Sometimes he would send a photo of a check or a photo of a bank transfer receipt. This amount would have been much more than the loan amount, so the girl never doubts. Then one day Simon would stop picking up the phone, communication would end, and the girl would be left with thousands of dollars in unpaid credit card and bank debt.
He would try this technique on many girls at the same time and with the money taken from one girl, he would make another girl look like a paradise and with the money of the second, he would show it to the third. To show his busyness, Simon would sometimes be in Sweden, sometimes in Paris, sometimes in Amsterdam or some other European country. Actually Simon was a resident of Israel and his real name was Shimon Hayut. Once upon a time, in order to fall in love, two people used to see each other, meet, increase their acquaintance with time and then somewhere the love deepens. It’s a bit old fashioned in the age of online and visuals, but to think that some scion of a diamond company is showing you the colors of life, blowing money on you but that money has been found by fooling some other girl? This is never possible.
Cecile from Finland, living in London, spent around Rs 1.8 crore on Simon in this manner, some in cash and some through credit cards which were never returned. In the first meeting with debt-ridden Cecil, Simon had also introduced his daughter and divorced wife to assure her, who used to praise Simon and took her to Bulgaria in a private jet. Cecil was very impressed by his style and got trapped in the web of his words and sometimes gave ten thousand and sometimes fifteen thousand dollars. Then Simon made him an employee of his diamond company to get a credit card in his name, salary slips for the last few years were also made and the credit card was ready. After several months of such sudden spending, Cecil became a little suspicious as credit card and bankers started sending recovery notices.
Simon had told Cecile that he was deleting his social media profiles and Tinder too but Cecile found him on Tinder and there were new pictures posted. When Cecil contacted his credit card company American Express, their officers came to his house and inquired about the whole matter from him. Then somewhere Cecil came to know that Simon is a habitual criminal and he traps girls in the same way. Cecil did not get freedom from debt but he got sadness and depression together. He had to be admitted to a mental hospital. During the search, more girls were found to be victims of Simon. Simon made one such girl, Parnila Sjoham, his girlfriend Tonhin, but did the same scam with her by making her his closest friend.
Aileen Charlotte of Amsterdam was also on the verge of disappearing after owing thousands of dollars of debt, but Aileen had read the news published on Simon, so she continued the drama of love with Simon. When Simon needed money, Aileen asked Simon to sell her clothes, shoes, bracelets etc. and went to his house and brought his goods with her. Now Aileen is trying to get her money by selling clothes and shoes of these expensive brands.
In 2019, Simon was caught with the help of Interpol and Israel’s police, but the girls were all adults, so the case had no merit, yet he was fined 15 months and about 44 thousand dollars by creating some fake identity and tax cases. . Simon is now out of jail and then roaming with a girl who is from Israel. Might be his new victim. The documentary is a scathing commentary on Aaj Ki Mohabbat and along with it, he has worked hard for months to bring the whole scam on screen. Today’s parents as well as those youth who see only glare should watch it. When those who tell the story of You Live Only Once (YOLO) come on the road with a loan of crores of rupees, they do not know what should be the next step in life. See and understand this fraud, this scam by the digital world. Warn all your acquaintances so that this naked and dirty dance of commercialization of love ends at least sometime.
